As summer is approaching, it’s very important to be ready with all preparation to make sure our pets are well protected from harms. If you think it’s hot outside, it’s even hotter for our pet.
Here are some tips for keeping our pets safe in summer heat
- 1. Make sure the pet has access to fresh and clean water.
- 2. Make sure the pet has access to shade when outside.
- 3. Make sure the pet is not locked in the car/vehicle.
- 4. Take walks during the cooler hours of the day/evening
- 5. Check outside or floor temperature when moving out for a pet walk
- 6. When walking, try to stay off of hot surfaces
- 7. Protect their Paws. Paw balm will help keep your pet’s paws nourished and protected. Products like shea butter, beeswax, and coconut oil can be useful. It creates a barrier between the ground and the paw pad against any sort of burns. Consult your vet consultant.
- 8. Keep the pet free of fleas, ticks and heartworms
- 9. Consider clipping the pet with long coats and apply sunscreen to your dog's skin
- 10. Avoid direct heat/sun on pet’s skin
- 11. Pets respond differently to heat than humans do. Dogs, for instance, sweat primarily through their feet. Room fans don't cool off pets as effectively as they do for us. Thus, don’t rely on fan
